Bag Lady

Yesterday at Wal-Mart I had a lovely encounter with a cute old lady. As I was grabbing a bag of celery, she stopped me and said, "Now do you know how to pick good celery?" I thought for a mintue. I know how to pick out good produce in just about every category-but not celery! And though celery is not usually the determining ingredient in many receipes, I thought it might be a good time to learn. So she told me that good celery is found purely by weight. After watching her give me SEVERAL examples (and a pop quiz) of right and wrong celeries, she marched me over to the freezers. She said, "This world is getting crazier and crazier! The price of peppers is 10 cents higher than it was last year!" I did realize the price of peppers had gone up but not enough to avoid them completely. So she showed me a frozen bag of cut, mixed peppers for a dollar 37. She had me smell the bag (which smelled really good), and guarunteed that what the picture diplayed on the bag was exactly what I would get inside. None of this marketing hanky panky that runs wildly out of control on some packaging. I was actually grateful because I am picky over what I buy frozen vs. fresh. Anyway, the peppers are great and it eliminates any waste. As we walked out of the aisle, she yelled over to the freezer re-stocking lady, "Just converted another one." I wondered how many women she had shared this tid-bit with. I thanked her and as I went on my way, with a wink she said, " We women have to stick together." What a darling woman she is! One day I hope to be that little old lady in Wal-Mart. And I think my focus will be something like eggplant...

That is really cute. So many things ring a bell in this post; While vacationing in Nome recently my sister in law always purchased frozen peppers because they never get fresh produce there and it costs an arm and a leg. Seriously! Like dollarS per A pepper. Anyway, when we came back to Oregon I looked for a frozen bag of peppers at our store and couldn't find them! I'll have to keep looking. As for eggplant, I bought one at our local farmer's market last weekend, having never bought one before and had no idea of how to check for freshness besides that it was at a farmer's market. Anyway, I tried my hand at eggplant parmigiana and it was just ok. Alright, my rant is done. BTW Josh's FOB was Camp Kalsu and he was/is a medic. We weren't married during his deployment, only friends at that point but our letters and emails are how we fell in love! So I don't totally know what you are going through and hope that I won't have to but it's always in the back of our minds.

Okay wait. I'm sure frozen peppers are fine for cooking, but not for sticking on a veggie tray, right? I'm a HUGE raw pepper fan. So are the kids.

And how DO you pick the right eggplant? I'm not waiting for you to become an old lady before I find out!

What a fun encounter! She may of made your day...but I know that you made hers. Sweet story--loved it! Like Juli, I am curious as well...Could they be used on a fresh veggie tray?

Don't you wish we and people everywhere we went, kind of guiding us and helping us learn, so we can be the old ladies giving produce advice some day? What a fun story!

What a cute story! I will have to be on the look out for her and her frozen peppers (I am not a fan of chopping but never thought to buy frozen).

What a fun encounter! (I actually was planning on saying that even before I read Diane's comment, so I wasn't copying?!)I have every reason to believe that you too will be every bit as cute an old lady as she is one day!...Me, there is no hope?! I have the "old" sewn up, but I still don't know how to pick out even a good watermelon?! I even ask the professionals for assistance and still can't get a good one?! At this very moment I have one in my frig that is so mushy I am going to the humbug of returning it tomorrow!
