Memories

The other night, I was making a big bowl of popcorn for a movie night with my kids. I had the most vivid and wonderful flashback to when I was little and my mom would take us to the Kahala Drive-in for a movie (usually to see the latest Disney- the one I remember most was Herbie Goes Bananas). It was always so much fun. She would pop enough popcorn to fill a big brown paper grocery bag. I always loved the sound of the popcorn machine in our kitchen-it was one of those sounds that signaled the beginning of fun. I also loved the classic dancing snacks on the big screen -so vintage! I loved the old speakers and finding the perfect spot to enjoy the movie. We would usually meet aunts and cousins there for a big family night of fun. It is one of my fondest childhood memories. And even as we got a bit older, we would still go to the Kailua drive-in. I felt gratitude for my mom taking us on adventures and helping us form these great memories. Love you Mom!

Man what a blast forom the past!!! Remember trying to get mom to say we had less people in the car than we did? We'd tell her that one of us would be under the blanket and no one would ever know. But she never did, and we were so disapointed! :)

Mom always honest.o you remember going with the Smiths and laying on top of their huge station wagon!.

Good times.

I know-it was so funny. Gone are the days of the yellow Vanagon. Sounds like it's time to bust out your Castle Grayskull and let the tears flow.

oh man! I miss Drive-ins!! We used to do those as a family too, but they charged us by the car not the amount of people. And those crappy speakers that they make you use! That was the best. And you could tune in to a certain frequency to hear it instead and there was always one or two people that needed a "jump" afterwards because their battery died! I really wish they hadn't gotten rid of them.

I remember all of our VW Vans lined up side by side and the tailgaits open. We could lay down the back bench and have a great big bed. I remember because of said bed in the back of the van I would fall asleep and not see much of any of the movies we went to see. My Dad owns a condo right next to the spot where the drive-in was. Tau and I stayed in it and would walkt to the times to get groceries. We reminissed (sp) about the drive in. :( Those big vans were the best, weren't they? Seems like we all had them. You guys, The manoa hallstroms, us, the wai's. Fun stuff.

Man, did I have a deprived childhood! I only vaguely remember going to the Kailua drive-inn once. Way to leave it up to the older kids to spoil it for the younger ones.

My drive-in experience is slim. I remember going to the Kailua drive-in when I was, like, 9 years old, and we saw a double-feature: "Back to the Future" and "Howard the Duck" (worst movie ever made). What I remember most is all of us trying to hide under the blankets to avoid getting eaten alive by mosquitos.

My second drive-in experience was much better--but I was in college by then and could appreciate it =).
